Het vrijheidsbeeld

Het symbool van de Verenigde Staten is het Vrijheidsbeeld.
Het vrijheidsbeeld is een van de belangrijkste symbolen van de rechten van de mens en het recht op gelijke kansen. Het Vrijheidsbeeld is een geschenk van Frankrijk en staat sinds 1866 aan de toegang tot de haven van New York

Hoogste boom ter wereld

De Sequoia is de hoogste boom ter wereld. Met zijn relatief slanke bouw kan hij nog zo'n 20 meter hoger worden dan grootste mammoetbomen, die weliswaar de grootste bomen ter wereld zijn in termen van volume. Het hoogste gekende exemplaar van de Sequoia boomsoort meet maar liefst 115,5 meter (gemeten in 2006)! Dit komt dicht in de buurt van de 120 à 130 m, dat volgens een biologische studie uit 2004, de maximum haalbare hoogte van een boom zou zijn.
